Ex-Pakistan PM Benazir assassinated
Dec 28, 07 1:40am
Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a suicide attack today, just two months after the former premier returned from exile for a political comeback.
Benazir, a two-time former prime minister, had just addressed a campaign rally for next month's parliamentary elections when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the venue in Rawalpindi, killing her and at least 20 other people.
There were unconfirmed reports that the attacker had also opened fire on her with a weapon before the explosion. (Photo taken shortly before she was killed)
"It may have been pellets packed into the suicide bomber's vest that hit her," interior ministry spokesman Javed Cheema told AFP.
“She has been martyred,” said party official Rehman Malik.
The Associated Press, citing Malik, reported that Benazir was shot in the neck and the chest before the gunman blew himself up.
Benazir was rushed to a hospital. But, at 6:16pm Pakistan time (9.16pm Malaysian time), she was declared dead.
It was the second suicide attack at a Benazir event since she had returned from exile in October, aiming to contest the elections, and comes amid an unprecedented wave of violence in the country.
The deadliest terror attack in Pakistan's history targetted her homecoming rally just hours after her return, leaving 139 people dead.
After that attack, authorities repeatedly warned her they had information that Islamic militants were trying to kill her.
Government officials said President Pervez Musharraf had been privately told of her death.
Her pledge for democracy
The killing will deepen the political crisis in Pakistan, where Islamic militants have vowed to disrupt the vote and Musharraf's opponents - including Benazir - accused him of planning to rig the result.
There have been more than 40 suicide attacks in Pakistan this year that have left at least 770 people dead.
Benazir, educated at Oxford and Harvard, became the first female prime minister of a Muslim country when she took the helm in Pakistan in 1988. Her father, also a Pakistani prime minister, was also assassinated, in 1979.
Recalling how she stood at his grave, Benazir once wrote: "At that moment I pledged to myself that I would not rest until democracy had returned to Pakistan."
She had repeatedly accused Musharraf of being dictator and had been campaigning with fierce criticisms of what she said was his autocratic rule, vowing her Pakistan People's Party would deliver democracy.
Her killing was immediately condemned by the United States, which counts Pakistan as a pivotal ally in the US-led "war on terror".
Protests across the country
Meanwhile Reuters reported that Pakistan has put its paramilitary forces on "red alert" across the country after the assassination of Benazir sparked violent protests by her supporters.
Musharraf denounced what he called a terrorist attack and appealed for calm after angry backers of the slain former prime minister took to the streets across Pakistan, from the Himalayas to the southern coast.
The unrest was predictably fiercest in her native Sindh province and its capital, Karachi.
"Police in Sindh have been put on red alert," said a senior police official. "We have increased deployment and are patrolling in all the towns and cities, as there is trouble almost everywhere."
Reports said security was deteriorating in Karachi, where thousands poured on to the streets to protest. At least three banks, a government office and a post office were set on fire, a witness said.
Tyres were set on fire on many roads, and shooting and stone-throwing was reported in many places. Most shops and markets in the city shut down.

Catholic weekly in quandary over permit
Dec 20, 07 12:52pm
The organ of the Catholic Church, Herald is facing problems in renewing its yearly publishing permit allegedly over the use of the word ¡¥Allah¡¦ in the weekly¡¦s Bahasa Malaysia section.
According to Church sources, the government is not happy with the use of the word ¡¥Allah¡¦ by the weekly when referring to ¡¥God¡¦ in Bahasa Malaysia.
The use of ¡¥Allah¡¦ outside of Islam has previously stirred controversies in Malaysia. Four years ago, the Bible in Iban language was banned because it translated the word ¡¥God¡¦ as Allah Taala, which resembles Islam¡¦s name for God, ¡¥Allah¡¦.
The ban was however lifted after protests from the Christian community.
The Herald, which is published in four languages - English, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil - has a circulation of 12,000. The weekly¡¦s permit is due to expire in two weeks.
The Herald - which publishes news and information for Catholics in Malaysia - have previously received written warnings pertaining to the content of their articles primarily those which touch on religious and political issues.
Most recently, the Herald frontpaged both the Bersih and Hindraf rally which saw tens of thousands protesters hitting the streets of Kuala Lumpur.
Remove BM section
Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang in a statement yesterday said the Home Ministry has imposed a new condition for the renewal of the Herald¡¦s publication permit - that the BM section of the weekly be removed altogether.
This is confirmed by sources close to the Catholic weekly.
Lim has described Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi¡¦s administration as one which has promoted religious polarisation the most as compared to four previous prime ministers.
Examples that the DAP veteran included are the demolition of the Sri Maha Mariaman Temple in Kampung Rimba Jaya in Shah Alam one week before Deepavali.
¡§This was followed by the disrespect and insensitivity when the Umno General Assembly was held on Deepavali ¡V imagine the protest and outrage if the MCA or MIC had held their general assemblies during the Hari Raya holidays,¡¨ he said.
In addition, during the party assembly, Umno Youth deputy chief and prime minister¡¦s son-in-law, Khairy Jamaluddin blamed the Indian news vendors for taking a holiday during Deepavali which resulted in Abdullah¡¦s speech as Umno president not being prominently reported by the media.
Lim also noted the incident when two Umno parliamentarians - Syed Hood Syed Edros (BN-Parit Sulong) and Mohamad Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) demanded the removal of the cross and demolition of Christian statues in mission schools.
¡§The PM must take urgent measures to arrest the worsening of inter-religious relations in the country and halt the growing number of incidents of disrespect and insensitivity felt by non-Muslim Malaysian,¡¨ he added.
No need for non-Muslim affairs dept
Meanwhile, Abdullah yesterday said it was not necessary to set up a non-muslim affairs department because an effective special committee is already in place.
He said this after Indian non-governmental organisations requested the government to set up the department to handle the affairs of non-Muslims in the country.
The premier explained that the existing committee in the PM's Department comprised of
Minister in the PM's Department Bernard Dompok (handling Christian matters), Works Minister S Samy Vellu (Hindu) and Housing and Local Government Minister Ong Ka Ting (Buddhism).
Abdullah also said that the National Unity Department has a similar committee with a minister (Dr Maximus Ongkili) entrusted with matters pertaining to solidarity, religions and beliefs.

Prelude to an ISA crackdown
Beh Lih Yi Dec 8, 07 11:19am
The authorities appeared to be laying the groundwork to invoke the Internal Security Act against key leaders in Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), ex-ISA detainees said.
This came after Inspector General-of-Police Musa Hassan accused the group, which led a rare mass protest of 30,000 Indian Malaysians on Nov 25, of having connections with terrorists.
Saari Sungib, who was held under the notorious Internal Security Act (ISA) in 2001 with nine others reformasi activists, said the current signs were similar to those before the arrest of his group six years ago.
“They accused us of using molotov cocktails, grenade launchers and that we had links with terror groups to topple the government,” he said in reference to why they were detained then under the ISA, which allows for detention without trial.
The claim - not proven to date - was then vehemently rejected by the group, which was actively involved in the free Anwar Ibrahim campaign launched after the latter’s sacking as the deputy premier.
‘Easiest way’
In a statement on Thursday, Musa has accused Hindraf leaders of seeking support from terrorists, smearing Malaysia’ reputation and inciting racial hatred - a serious charge in the multi-racial country dominated by Malay Muslims.
The police chief however did not furnish further details on his allegation and did not identify the alleged terrorist groups, while Hindraf denied the allegation immediately.
Saari, who is now PAS Selangor information chief, said he believed ISA may be invoked against the Hindraf leaders as the “(police’s) special branch personnel are prone to recommend the use of the ISA”.
“It’s the easiest way for them (the authority),” he added.
Another ex-ISA detainee, Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor was of the view that although there were similar signs to the last round of crackdown using the ISA, it would not be meted out any time soon.
“The authorities are using different means through the police or court, like rejecting the detainees’ bail. Making it as harsh as possible. I believe ISA will only be the last option,” said Ezam, who heads an anti-corruption watchdog now.
He urged Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi not to resort to the use of ISA as it denied the accused’s right to be heard.
“Until today, some still think I am a militant,” he said of his detention under the ISA.
‘BN’s publicity exercise’
Ezam also called on both parties - Hindraf and police - to be accountable for their statements.
“Hindraf leaders need to be responsible in their words and the police need to substantiate their accusation of Hindraf’s terror links. If the police do have evidence, charge them in court and let them have a chance to defend themselves,” he added.
PKR information chief Tian Chua meanwhile described the police’s allegation as “ridiculous”.
“This is a serious state security issue. If the police suspect Hindraf leaders as having links with terrorists, they should have conducted a thorough investigation, get a conclusive answer and charge them in court with due process.
“But why is the police involved in this entire publicity exercise for the BN now and the police chief acting like a spokesperson for BN?” asked Chua, who was also detained along with Ezam and Saari under the ISA in 2001.
On the use of ISA against Hindraf leaders, Chua was uncertain whether it will lead to that stage.
“But if the prime minister does so, his efforts to be a more open-minded and liberal leader will go down the drain,” he stressed.
Abdullah, who is also the internal security minister, holds the discretion to sign the ISA detention order, which is renewable every two years.

Najib: Malay anger under control
Yoges Palaniappan Dec 10, 07 6:47pm
The anger of the Malays following the Nov 25 demonstration organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) is under control, said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today.
He said the Malays were satisfied with the measures employed by the government in tackling the issue.
“We don’t have to dance to the tune played by Hindraf...who are they? They don’t represent the Indian community in Malaysia
“If they act beyond the law, we will take stern action and the reality is, we have taken action,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
In a related development, Najib said PPP president M Kayveas will be asked to explain his statement to the press concerning the Hindraf rally.
In a report published by the Star today, Kayveas, who is also deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the Indian community had protested against MIC and not the government.
“This is Kayveas’ view which was published in the daily, I will ask him to explain,” said the deputy premier.
In the report, Kayveas, who has been crossing swords with MIC leaders of late, was also quoted as saying, “Has the government done enough for the community? Some will say yes, some will say no. But MIC is answerable to both these groups.”
Opposition slammed
In another development, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar criticised opposition leaders for running down Malaysia’s image internationally for political mileage.
“Upholding the image and dignity of the nation is a collective responsibility,” he said in reply to a question from Senator Dr Norraesah Mohamad in the Dewan Negara today.
The minister said one example is the action by PKR adviser Anwar Ibrahim who feeds the Indonesian media with untrue stories about Malaysia.
Norraesah had asked if there is a hidden hand behind the unfavourable reports by the Indonesia media.
Syed Hamid said to overcome this problem, the ministry is taking a proactive approach by explaining to the people of Indonesia that whatever actions taken by the government is based on law and not discrimination.
“The ministry will try and correct whatever misunderstandings because the bilateral ties between the two nations is precious,” he said.

Police report against Rahim’s fiery speech
Dec 5, 07 2:01pm
Malaysiakini
An opposition youth leader from Malacca today lodged a police report against the state’s former chief minister Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik for allegedly inciting racial hatred against non-Malays.
The state’s DAP youth leader Tey Kok Kiew based his report on an article which was published by Chinese daily China Press on Sunday which quoted Abdul Rahim as saying: “The Malays have never taken to the streets so do not force us to do so as we will draw our parang (machete) to defend the Ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy) in this country.”
Abdul Rahim is said to have made the statement in his speech as the chairperson of the Malay Economic Body (Gabem) during a ceremony in Malacca last Saturday.
In his police report lodged at the Melaka Tengah police station, Tey accused Abdul Rahim of attempting to use violence in order to defend the Malay supremacy by delivering the seditious speech.
He added that Abdul Rahim was trying to influence the Malay public to act violently against non-Malays street protesters.
He also said that Abdul Rahim was encouraging violence in his speech.
Tey said the police must investigate and act against Abdul Rahim if he is found to have said the seditious remarks.
Indians on streets
Abdul Rahim’s speech is believed to have been made in light of the recent street protests in Kuala Lumpur.
On Nov 25, about 30,000 Indian Malaysians brought the busy Jalan Ampang to a standstill for about six hours, as they attempted to march to the British High Commission to submit a petition claiming they have been marginalised since being brought to Malaya as indentured labourers.
The police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd. Government leaders later attacked the rally - organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force - as being racially motivated.
The organisers have also been accused as “liars and extremists” following their claims that the Indian community had suffered from government-endorsed “ethnic cleansing”.

Bail denied for 31 Hindraf protesters
Andrew Ong and Wong Teck Chi Dec 6, 07 11:16am
Malaysiakini
The Shah Alam Sessions Court today denied bail to 31 Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) protesters charged with the attempted murder of a police officer during an illegal gathering at the Batu Caves temple in the early hours of Nov 25.Judge Azimah Omar said she was denying bail for national security reasons and based on the severity of the charges, which also included causing mischief.Twelve of the 31 are also charged with participating in the illegal assembly.Azimah fixed Jan 14-18 to hear the matter. Those accused will remain in remand at the Sungai Buloh prison until the disposal of the case.Yesterday, Attorney-General (AG) Abdul Gani Patail objected to bail on grounds that the offences of attempted murder and causing mischief are not bailable.
He also told the court that the accused are dangerous to public order.
In her judgment, Azimah stressed that she had carefully weighed the facts of the case and that her decision was not based on racial and religious considerations.
Review application soon
Lead defence counsel GK Ganesan said he was “unhappy” with Azimah’s decision and that a review would be sought soon at the high court.
Another defence lawyer P Uthayakumar told reporters later that the case had angered the Indian community.
“They are already being pushed to the wall. Now, they want to push us beyond the wall,” said Uthayakumar, who is one of Hindraf’s key leaders.
He alleged that the case brought against the 31 was a political decision and that the AG had practised selective prosecution.
He reiterated his stand that the AG has acted on the Hindraf rally and their supporters because the group was made up of Indians.
He said the AG did not act on other major rallies without police permits this year with a Malay-majority participation, such as the Bersih rally on Nov 10.
Uthayakumar also slammed Abdul Gani for linking Hindraf with a Sri Lankan separatist group during bail application proceedings yesterday.
“The AG is trying to divert the issue by linking us to a terrorist organisation,” he added.
Families shocked
When the court decision was announced this morning, it caused shock and surprise among family members, some of whom broke into tears. Two women fainted outside the courtroom.
The crowd jeered at passing policemen, while some told reporters to tell the truth.
“Watch what you write. We’re not gangsters. Don’t tarnish our names,” shouted one man.
“We’re not part of Hindraf. Why are they doing this to us?” exclaimed another.
Earlier, as the court was fixing a hearing date, Uthayakumar lost his cool and accused the prosecution team of purposely choosing a later date.
He angrily accused the AG of being “scared”. This prompted AG’s Chambers prosecution department chief Yusof Zainal Abiden to shoot back “we’re not!” and a heated exchange ensued.
Once Azimah restored order, she warned Uthayakumar that she had been patient with him over the last three days of proceedings.

Radio DJs punished for supporting Hindraf
K Kabilan
Dec 3, 07
State-owned Tamil radio station Minnal FM has sacked several presenters - including some popular ones - for supporting the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).
Sources told Malaysiakini that others have been suspended.
It is learnt that seven presenters were affected in the exercise, including two presenters working on contract. The station has 20 full-time presenters.
The severe action was for either taking part in the Hindraf-organised rally in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 25 or for giving prominence for the rally and Hindraf on air, added the sources.
Among those sacked or suspended are popular DJs K Meenakumari, K Sillalee (left) and V Jamuna (right). The latter was a hugely popular contract presenter.
Minnal FM¡¦s director Raja Sekaran was not available for comment while queries to the station remain unanswered.
Restructuring exercise
However, a source close to the station told Malaysiakini that the dismissal was a staff-restructuring exercise undertaken by the radio station which is increasingly losing out to private Tamil radio station THR Raga.
¡§There are talks within Minnal to hire fresh faces to revamp the station. Maybe that¡¦s why some of the contractual presenters were let go,¡¨ said the source.
Another source said the station was in the midst of offering a different category of employment to the terminated presenters, and as such would need to give them new contractual terms.
A former Minnal FM presenter, however, said the station director has been unhappy with the work of the seven presenters and finally decided to terminate them on the grounds of their involvement with Hindraf.
Hindraf has been under fire recently over its demands for the upliftment of the Indian community which the organisation claims is sidelined by the government, a charge denied by the government and the Indian-based MIC.
On Nov 25, the organisation managed to gather a crowd of 30,000 at Jalan Ampang to march to the British High Commission to deliver a memorandum seeking the assistance of the Queen of England.

On Nov 25, the organisation managed to gather a crowd of 30,000 at Jalan Ampang to march to the British High Commission to deliver a memorandum seeking the assistance of the Queen of England.

Dear all
Please take time to read below and forward on…
Pahlawan Volunteers recommend that UMNO sacks these two MPs with immediate effect to restore public confidence in the Government the rakyat voted in.
Below is the translation of the hansard at the Third Meeting of The Fourth Session of Eleventh Parliament (Dewan Rakyat) on Monday, 29 October 2007 as seen at http://www.parlimen.gov.my/hindex/pdf/DR-29102007.pdf - pages 143-144.
Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Yang Di-Pertua, I would like to touch on a matter regarding the Ministry of Education, which are Christian missionary schools like Convent, La Salle, Methodist, and so forth. I was made to understand that the Board of Directors at these schools are partially administered by churches in foreign countries, for example in the Vatican City. I was also made to understand that the application to build a ’surau’ in some of these schools had to go through the approval of these Board of Directors whereby they are partially administered by the church. Therefore, it shames me that the school administrations are still controlled by the church. I was also made to understand that many Muslim parents send their kids to these schools, and that they have complained that sometimes, the school is started with church songs. I do not know if this is true, but what I discovered from these parents are the display of religious symbols. I feel disappointed that in an Islamic country, Malaysia, if I go to a convent school, the statue of St. Mary is displayed in the front of the school.
Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: [Stands up]
Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Please proceed, Yang Berhormat for Sri Gading.
Timbalan Yang di-Pertua [Datuk Dr. Yusof bin Yacob]: Yes, Yang Berhormat for Sri Gading.
Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: I am not shocked at all, Yang Berhormat for Parit Sulong. It’s not just a simple question. The question is, why has this happened? One. During the last Hari Raya, I was told by a father, when Aidilfitri was celebrated, these types of schools were not closed. Thank you.
Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Not only statues, but fellow Yang Berhormat, go and see for yourselves, Christian crosses are displayed in front of schools. I do not understand the Ministry of Education, did the officers not see that, or is it our policy to allow such a thing? Nevertheless, I, as a responsible person to my religion, race, and country, I state my views that these statues need to be demolished, these crosses need to be destroyed and church influences in these schools need to be stopped. Also, the funds that are collected at these schools. Do we have a report? If possible, the ministry should reveal the funds for these schools. I was made to understand that these schools are also sponsored by the church.

my personal opinions...
january 2008 - likely... but, he got to call it fast before the increase of prices, especially the oil prices... he boldly mentioned and confirmed re the increase toll rates, but says nothing about the increase of oil, pls prepare for the worse increase even in history!...
february 2008 - unlikely... unless he wants to screw around with the chinese and with the chinese votes... cny is around the 1st week of february 2008...
march 2008 - unlikely... due to the anwar factor... anwar will be back officially around mid-march 2008...
april 2008 - unlikely... still due to anwar factor...
may 2008 - likely... everything will be calm again, increase of prices, anwar factor, major festive celebration, etc...
june 2008 - likely... everything will be calm again, increase of prices, anwar factor, major festive celebration, etc...
there's a slight possibility for him to call for the general election 3rd or 4rd week of february 2008 or even he may do it on the 1st week of march 2008... school holidays may not be a factor for him to decide...
wat's yr take?!?...

At 84, the fire still burns!
By Ahmad Mustapha
Singapore's Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew, who was Singapore's founding father, has always been very direct in his comments. This was the man who outsmarted the communists in Singapore (with the innocent help of Malaya then and the willing help of the British) and who later outwitted the British and outpaced Malaysia in all spheres.
Singapore practices corrupt-free meritocracy and Malaysia affirmative action. The former attracted all the best brains and the latter chased out all the brains. The Singapore cabinet consists of dedicated and intelligent technocrats whereas Malaysia has one the most unwieldy cabinets. Not only that, brain wise it was below par not even good for the kampong.
With that kind of composition, one that is very brainy, naturally Singapore , with no natural resources could outstrip Malaysia in every aspect of development. Malaysia, on the other hand, was too much preoccupied with its Malayness and the illusory 'Ketuanan Melayu' and was also more interested in useless mega iconic development rather than real social and economic development.
Whenever Kuan Yew utters anything that deemed to be a slight on Malaysia , voices were raised admonishing him. Malaysia would never dare to face reality. That Singapore had shown that it could survive was a slap on those who believed that Singapore would fold up once it left Malaysia . Therefore it was natural that these doomsayers would try to rationalise their utterances to be in their favour to combat on whatever Kuan Yew commented. Its political jealousy.
Singapore achieved its development status without any fanfare. But here in Malaysia , a development that was deceptive was proclaimed as having achieved development status. It was trumpeted as an achievement that befits first world status. This was self delusion. Malaysians are led to believe into a make believe world, a dream world. The leaders who themselves tend to believe in their own fabricated world did not realise the people were not taken in by this kind of illusion.
Lee Kuan Yew believed in calling a spade a spade. I was there in Singapore when the People's Action Party won the elections in 1959. He was forthright in his briefing to party members as to what was expected of them and what Singapore would face in the future. Ideologically, I did not agree with him. We in the University of Malaya Socialist Club had a different interpretation of socialist reconstruction. But he was a pragmatist and wanted to bring development and welfare to the Singaporeans. Well! He succeeded.
Malaysia was so much embroiled in racial politics and due to the fear of losing political power, all actions taken by the main party in power was never targeted towards bringing wealth to all. Wealth was distributed to the chosen few only. They were the cronies and the backers of the party leadership to perpetuate their own selfish ends.
Seeing the efficiency and the progress achieved by Singapore caused the Malaysian leadership to suffer from an inferiority complex. That Malaysia should suffer from this complex was of its own making.
In a recent interview, Kuan Yew said that Malaysia could have done better if only it treated its minority Chinese and Indian population fairly. Instead they were completely marginalised and many of the best brains left the country in drove. He added that Singapore was a standing indictment to what Malaysia could have done differently. He just hit the nail right there on the head.
Malaysia recently celebrated its 50th year of independence with a bagful of uncertainties. The racial divide has become more acute. The number of Malay graduates unemployed is on the increase. And this aspect can be very explosive. But sad to see that no positive actions have been taken to address these social ills.
Various excuses were given by Malaysian leaders why Singapore had far outstripped Malaysia in all aspects of social and economic advancement. Singapore was small, they rationalised and therefore easy to manage. Singapore was not a state but merely an island.
There was one other aspect that Malaysia practises and that is to politicise all aspects of life. All government organs and machinery were 'UMNO-ised'. This was to ensure that the party will remain in power. Thus there was this misconception by the instruments of government as to what national interest is and what UMNO vested interest is.
UMNO vested interest only benefited a few and not the whole nation. But due to the UMNO-isation of the various instruments of government, the country under the present administration had equated UMNO vested interest as being that of national interest. Thus development became an avenue of making money and not for the benefit of the people. The fight against corruption took a back seat. Transparency was put on hold. And the instruments of government took it to be of national interest to cater to the vested interest of UMNO. Enforcement of various enactments and laws was selective. Thus a 'palace' in Kelang, APs cronies and close-one-eye umno MPs could exist without proper procedure. Corruption infested all govt departments, the worse is the police and lately even in the judiciary.
Singapore did not politicise its instruments of government. If ever policisation took place, it is guided by national interest. To be efficient and to be the best in the region was of paramount importance. Thus all the elements like corruption, lackadaisical attitude towards work and other black elements, which would retard such an aim, were eliminated. Singapore naturally had placed the right priority in it's pursuit to achieve what is best for its people. This is the major difference between these two independent countries.
Malaysia in its various attempts to cover up its failures embarked on several diversions. It wanted its citizens to be proud that the country had the tallest twin-tower in the world, although the structure was designed and built by foreigners. Its now a white-elephant wasting away. It achieved in sending a man into space at an exorbitant price. What for purpose? These are what the Malays of old would say "menang sorak" (hollow victories).
It should be realised that administering a country can be likened to managing a corporate entity. If the management is efficient and dedicated and know what they are doing, the company will prosper. The reverse will be if the management is poor and bad. The company will go bust.
There are five countries around this region. There is Malaysia , and then Indonesia . To the east there is the Philippines and then there is that small enclave called the Sultanate of Brunei . All these four countries have abundance of natural resources but none can lay claim to have used all these resources to benefit the people. Poverty was rampant and independence had not brought in any significant benefits to the people.
But tiny Singapore without any resources at all managed to bring development to its citizens. It had one of the best public MRT transport systems and airlines in the world and it is a very clean city state. Their universities, health care, ports are among the best in the world.
It is impossible to compare what Singapore has achieved to what all these four countries had so far achieved. It was actually poor management and corruption, and nothing more. Everything is done for the vested interest of the few.
Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines and the Sultanate of Brunei need good management teams. They would not be able to do this on their own steam. I would advise that they call on Kuan Yew to show them what good governance is. Why look East to Japan when it is just next door across the causeway.

Why look East to Japan when it is just next door across the causeway.

is it possible for us to have the same kinda peace and democracy, if the opposition wins a general election and takes over the ruling!?... yes?!?... why?!?... no?!?.. why?!?...

boiling frog syndrome...
anyone remember the story of the boiling frog syndrome?!?....
if you put a frog into boiling water, the frog will immediately jump out... but if you put the frog in cold water and slowly increase the heat of the water, it will get accustomed to the increasing heat and eventually the frog will be boiled/cooked...
are we in the boiling frog syndrome?!?... i seriously think we are!...
for example... if i remember correctly... the very 1st time malaysia was declared an islamic state was when mm announced it somewhere in the 80s/90s... a big ferocious uproar then... one can see how the non malays votes swing, etc... this tradition of making annoucement that malaysia is an islamic state happens every now and then, people are so used to it now... people do not bother about it... people do not care about it... simply because people are experiencing the boiling frog syndrome!...
another exmaple would be... our minister-of-education-but-send-his-children-to-overseas-for-studies... he wave his keris and people ask him when is he gonna use it.. even if this is not an issue of religion/racial, isn't this an issue and an act of violence?!?... wat did he said?!?... he said he will continue to wave the keris until people are desensitised on this matter!... all you know is, everything will be ok after the next few times he wave the keris... soon, people will be so used to it... people will not bother about it... people will not care about it... simply because the people will be boiled/cooked via the the boiling frog syndrome way then!...
so many things happening all this while and lately too.. most, if not all are putting dents after dents to the country and the reputation of malaysia... in no particular order... sleeping pm, nepotism, cronyism, promoting mat rempits, rising crime, continuance of nep, race based politics, hardcore poverty, judiciary system, contorlled freedom of press, controlled freedom of religion, almost zero transparency, blatant on-the-table corruption, islamisation in a secular country, sluggish economy, toll hike, fuel hike, education, poor public transport system, demonising bloggers, local councillors, useless elected mps, that bodoh/pondan de facto law minister, that arrongant son-in-law, leakages in brand new building, collapsing of incomplete building, brain drain, 'consistent' death casualty in civil service, abuse of power by authorities, violence committed by authorities, long outstanding court hearings, security of the children, soaring cost of living, etc... pls tell me wat's good about malaysia now!...
50 years into independence and the most basic rights of the rakyat is denied... take bersih rally and hindraf rally for the simplest examples... why can't they issue the permit for a peaceful gathering?!?... wat farking problem are they talking about?!?... they say the rally will have problems, i say those rodents sitting up there are the problems!... they say the traffic jam are caused by the people who will be attending the rally, i say those rodent sitting up there are casuing the traffic jam!... it's common sense afterall...
malaysia is in a mess.. a big mess!... tks to bn/umno every single rakyat will have something got to do with politics in one way or another, like it or not... it's a brutal fact and it is definitely not very nice!... to me personally, the only way to bring back the glorious days of malaysia when we have nothing but the glowing muhibbah spirit is when the whole country is literally flat again!... only then we can see people regardless race/religion work literally hand-in-hand in building up the nation, again!... that's probably the only way for the better of malaysia and our future generations, if bn/umno continue the rule the country with fraud and they not changing in some of their policies which is 'promoting' marginalisation, one-sided values, hatred, greed, etc...
for a few times lately i thought of going with the umno flow... the thought of, 'why fight when you know you gonna lose' came across my mind couple of times... but, deep down in me i know malaysia still have hope, i know there are loads more sensible rakyat out there, i know i love my country, i know many people have the same vision as mine, i know things can still be changed, etc... it's only selfish for me to go with the wrong flow!... gonna make that change with so many others!...
p/s ; my ramblings on a friday noon and at the same time i am very worried and angry with wat is going on in this country!...

to those who do not know wat is going in the election commission (ec) and why bersih is pushing for a massive reformation, couple of points below may be interesting for you...
1 - ipoh timur won by 9,000+ votes in the 2004 general election... 8,000+ came into that constituency 'mysteriously' fm a bn stonghold constituency... postal votes, phantom votes, etc...
2 - ipoh barat won by 500+ votes in the 2004 general election, but ec decided 'some' areas which have approx 800+ voters, which is bn strong hold to fall under the ipoh barat constituency...
3 - bukit bintang won by couple of hundred votes in the 2004 general election, but there are 2,000+ postal votes added to bukit bintang... fyi, postal votes are mainly meant for those police, civil servants who work elsewhere, etc... 2,000+ postal votes by police, etc in bukit bintang?!?... bukit bintang should be a very safe place to visit eh?!?...
4 - there are people who have been voting since 2-3 general elections in seputeh constituency, some found out that they are 'mysteriously transfered' to some other place hundreds of kilometers away...
5 - understand kelantan have thousands of phantom voters register in some invalid/not recognise address...
6 - most shaocking is... mp fm batu gajah and her family is living in the same house ever since she was born or soemthing along that line.. she found out that her family members have also been 'mysteriously transfered' to some other constituency... if they dare to touch a mp's family members by transfering their voting place/s here and there, the rakyat is absolutely not a problem to them...
many more...
see how 'effective' they are working to deny any seats for the oppostion in the parliament?!?...
ec is crap!... manipulating the most basic rights of the rakyat to the fullest!...
they even talk about extending the ec top fella 'contract'... the fella supposed to retire!... owhh wow, the even dare to 'amend' the constituition of the country?!?...
p/s ; with these simple examples, i hope now you know how important is bersih...

Date : 13th November 2007
Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz,
Prime Minister's Department,
Bangunan Parliament,
Jalan Parliament,
Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia.
Subject : Parliament Hearing On the 12th November 2007 And Bersih Rally.
Dear Datuk Seri,
With reference to the above subject, I, as a concern rakyat of our
beloved and peaceful country, Malaysia, if allow and with much due
respect, would like to comment on the words you used in the August
hall.
Be it for opposition parties/people and/or to any other people who are
gifts fm The Man above, words like 'pondans', 'wimps', 'wires in their
heads are severed', 'bodoh', 'racist', 'perkauman', etc., to my honest
opinions, should not be use in the August hall where people all over
the world are watching us, especially with what is happening in our
country lately. Also, especially coming from someone who is serving
the country and her citizens under the prime minister's department.
Those kind of words like 'pondans', 'wimps', 'wires in their heads are
severed', 'bodoh', 'racist', 'perkauman', etc., was, to my honest opinion,
definitely uncalled for.
Yes, I, as a concern rakyat of our beloved and peaceful country,
Malaysia, know those may be one of the spur of the moment kind of
thing, but those kind of spur of the moment thing has been happening
very frequently lately and has been repeated time after time. Perhaps
Malaysiakini and Youtube have tons of the articles and video recordings
to prove it.
Datuk Seri, for your information, the 100,000 Bersih Rally was not a
political gathering and there was nothing political with that gathering. It
was meant for the concern rakyat from various backgrounds to gather
and march to the Istana Negara to submit a memorandum to the King
and to ask His Majesty for His royal pardon for a massive reformation
on the electoral roll which is tainted with smears of negativities.
With much due respect, I, as a concern rakyat of our beloved and
peaceful country, Malaysia, would also wants to know why are there
no action/s being taken by the election commission in hearing what
the rakyat wants which the rakyat have been longing for?. Is this
democratic or is this democracy?. The rakyat have definitely spoke
as one loud voice.
On the same subject, you may ask us, the rakyat to dissent our anger
via the ballot boxes, speak our mind via the ballot boxes, let our feelings
be known via the ballot boxes, etc., but, if the whole electoral roll is
tained with smear of negativities, how can the rakyat put their trust in
believing their votes will not be tainted with smear of negativities?.
Malaysia is a democratic country as many leaders in this country
would put it, but what is happening currently definitely proves
otherwise.
I, as a concern rakyat of our beloved and peaceful country, Malaysia,
would appreciate if you, as the minister in the prime minister's
department, could personally look into the interest of the rakyat, as
the rakyat are the greatest assets of this lovely and peaceful country,
definitely not any natural resources which will 'dry up' in due course
of time!.
Pls assist and let the voices of the rakyat be heard and together we
shall bring Malaysia back to her feet competing with the best in the
world, where the countries were once behind us in everything went
ahead of us in everything.
Have a good and productive day ahead!.
Thanking you in advance,

i personally urge every single concern rakyat to write the same kinda letter.. let the 'leaders' know what are the thoughts of yours!... small, but effective step... eventho, they may not take any action on it... you know you did yr part!... this is another way to be pro-active for the concern rakyat to take their very first steps into righting the wrongs!...
p/s ; this is wat prompted me to write an open letter to him... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuGZRpD347I)...
With much due respect, I, as a concern rakyat of our beloved and
peaceful country, Malaysia, would also wants to know why are there

democratic or is this democracy?. The rakyat have definitely spoke

have been challenged, abdullah ahmad badawi!... by m bakri musa...
rakyat juga pantang dicabar!...
Have Been Challenged, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi!
by M. Bakri Musa
“Saya pantang dicabar!” (lit: “I am allergic to challenges;” fig. “Don’t challenge me!”) declared Prime Minister Abdullah in an uncharacteristically bold assertion to the media on the eve of BERSIH’s massive street demonstrations in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday, November 10, 2007.
You have now been challenged, Mr. Prime Minister, openly and publicly by your own citizens, and you have emerged impotent! That huge street rally may be illegal to you, but the King had consented to receiving its leaders and their petition. In effect, the King too has challenged you, Abdullah! In case you did not get the message, you had just been served a very public royal rebuff.
I too, challenge you, Abdullah! Instead of arresting those ordinary citizen demonstrators, I dare you to arrest their leaders, Anwar Ibrahim, Hadi Awang, Lim Kit Siang, and Raja Petra Kamarudin. Those ordinary folks were merely exercising their basic rights as citizens of a democracy: the right to free assembly and to petition the authorities.
As per the refrain of the Ghostbusters theme song, “Who are you gonna call now!” Mr. Prime Minister? Your fabulous Fourth Floor boys? Your son-in-law who is using you as his “protection?” Imagine being considered as such by your son-in-law!
Khairy Jamaluddin obviously had not heard of your “demonstrations are not part of our Malay culture” bit. Either that or Khairy had blissfully ignored it as when he led that pathetic street demonstration against your official guest, US State Secretary Rice.
In a speech earlier in the week, Khairy demanded that the authorities “come down hard” on the BERSIH demonstrators. While there were some water cannons and tear gas canisters unloaded, the demonstrations went ahead smoothly and successfully to the palace. The police even released most of those arrested. Your son-in-law challenged you to be tough on the demonstrators, and you came out lembik (limp).
Dim Wit Understanding of Democracy
In denying the BERSIH demonstrators their police permit, Abdullah demonstrated only a dim wit understanding of democracy, akin to that held by Saddam Hussein and Pervez Musharraf. Both were voted in with over 98 percent of the votes, and they took that to mean they could ride roughshod over their country and citizens. Never mind that their elections were anything but fair and free.
Democracy means rule of the people, but it does not mean mob rule legitimized through the ballot box. Electoral victory is not a license for tyranny of the majority. As Fareed Zakaria wrote so eloquently in his book, The Future of Freedom, democracy is more than just elections. Even if elections were fair and free (far from the reality in Malaysia, hence the demonstrations!), obsession with or sole reliance on them would threaten the other far more important aspects like the rule of law, private property rights, separation of powers, and the right to free speech and to assemble freely.
Elections regular or otherwise, honest or rigged, do not guarantee these; only independent and impartial judges could. An independent judiciary is thus the hallmark as well as the guarantor of democracy and freedom, certainly much more than universal adult suffrage.
As for the state of the Malaysian judiciary, the Lingam tapes painfully showed what a sorry mess it is in. Even if BERSIH were completely successful with its petition and the Elections Commission completely overhauled, there is still the monumental task of cleaning up the judiciary and restoring its long lost integrity.
These points are elementary and obvious to all, save the dim witted.
Time to Deliver The Next Lesson
There is another feature of the dim witted; they are slow learners. It is unlikely for them to have learned a lesson from Bersih’s successful rally, or if they did it may not have stuck.
Since the only lesson that would register on their thick skulls is election returns, my friend Din Merican had started a campaign to register voters. The next step would be to ensure that they will vote against the Barisan coalition.
It would encourage voters to do that if there were to be substantial and effective co-ordination among the opposition parties to ensure that there would only be a one-on-one battle with the Barisan in every constituency. The objective here is rather modest, to inflict enough damage to the Barisan coalition such that it would precipitate internal squabbling especially within UMNO to trigger its implosion.
Selecting the best candidate, meaning one who would most likely defeat the Barisan’s nominee, involves studying the demographics of the constituency as well as the Barisan’s candidate. Since race is never far from voters’ considerations, the best avenue to neutralize this crucial factor would be to field candidates of the same race as the Barisan’s nominees. This was the clear lesson from the recent Ijok by-elections. Thus the opposition must be ready to change candidates on nomination day depending on who would represent Barisan.
For example, if Barisan were to re-nominate the current MCA candidate but at the last minute the seat were to go to UMNO, then the opposition must be ready to substitute a Malay candidate. If that party (like DAP for instance) cannot come up with a Malay nominee, then it should be willing to give the slot to a Malay from one of the other parties.
BERSIH’s victory should embolden the citizens to impart to the Barisan government the other equally important lesson: cleaning out the rot in the judiciary. No less than a full Royal Commission with full powers to subpoena witnesses and grant them immunity should be the objective. As Fareed Zakaria noted, an impartial and independent judiciary is the best guarantor of our freedoms and democracy. We must keep drumming these lessons lest they forget easily.
We must keep mencabar (challenging) Abdullah until he comes to his senses and realizes the obvious: the job of being a Prime Minister of our great nation is way above his head. If he does not, others either within or outside his party should be emboldened enough to tell him so.

sharing my personal experience on the bersih gathering/march and what i have learned...
"people should not be afraid of their governments, the governmets should be afraid of their people"...
precisely!...
when i got up approx 1100 hours on 10th october 2007, i know i will be part of the history in malaysia!...
just want to briefly share what i experienced in the bersih gathering/march which i attended with much enthusiasm!...
as most of you already know there are 4 meeting points for meet-up before we marched to dataran merdeka before we proceed to the palace to submit the memorandum to the king on asking for a massize reformation to the electoral roll.... i went to the sogo meeting point...
expecting the massive traffic out there... i took the public transport... i boarded the ktm komuter in kl sentral at approx 1145 hours... waited for at least 30 mins before the train actually moved an inch... apparently they have some 'technical problems' at the station in front... but, there was about 3 trains opposite the coach am in passed us by from the station in front of us!... 'technical problems' eh?!?... want to delay/deny us, say so lah... we understand the fear and uncertainties of certain people... :) ...
reached sogo approx 1245 hours, not before going though tens of police personnel starring at you as if you are a criminal, took my lunch and walked around and more and more people can be seen... i knew this is gonna be huge, really huge!... police personnels were all over the place inside and outside sogo then and helicopter right above us 'drowning' the noise of the people... a real low way of doing things eh?!?...
joined my group opposite sogo, which was only about 10 of us... had a drink with them.. changed into my xxxl yellow bersih t-shirt and voila... we marched towards the main entrance of sogo and greeted by roars and claps by hundreds of others, which was mainly pas supporters... made way for the 10 of us to be placed right in the middle of the group.... right after we arrived, one guy took over the meet-up with a prayer... at that particular time, the muhibbah thing struck me really hard... needless to say, the irritating helicopter which was flying really low 'drown' the prayers...
after the prayers, we started our march at approx 1400 hours with very gloomy looking sky above us!... minutes into our march just before the dbkl building on our right, it started pouring... came well prepared with plastic bags and a backpack to keep my stuffs dry.... :) ... fru set-up a barricade infront of us, they practically set up barricades surrounding the whole of dataran merdeka!... we then marched towards the main entrance of royal selangor club greeted by many others who was having their lunch there and the motorists opposite us kept honking at us and showing the thumbs up sign as support and that basically kept us moving further in the heavy downpour!... we passed the masjid negara opposite us minutes later.... thousands of them came over to join us, if am not mistaken including some heavy weights too fm that meeting point, at that time the crowd grew to easily to at least 400 meters long...
basically the 'chanting' of "daulat tuanku"... "hidup rakyat"... "hancur kezaliman"... hancur rasuah"... the takbir... etc.... heard even louder then...
at that particular time, i knew very much we are not heading to dataran merdeka, instead we will be marching towards the palace directly!...
as we were passing the chinese assembly hall, another group join us... as this particular time, the crowd grew to at least 600 meters long!... a sea of yellow can be seen when i looked back, a beautiful and motivating sight!... at that time, the rain start slowing down...
as we were passing by public bank on our right and nearing the palace... thousands more joined the line... it was at this time i spotted a guy in crutches with a leg amputated, all soaked up, marching his way to the palace... this stunned me for a while thinking how can a person with one leg do this!.. shame one me when the first i heard about this bersih gathering/march, i was actually thinking and contemplating whether to go for it or not!... shame on me!... i have the utmost respect for that guy!... God bless him, whoever he is!...
we reached at the main entrance of the palace at approx 1500 hours... some heavy weights gave some short speeches... at approx 1530 hours or so, the memorandum were submitted to the king's special assistant or to someone along that line... still drizzling at that time... met my eldest brother there who were also drenched in the rain, am surprised he actually came for it tho!... :) ... i thought it was a joke when he told me he is coming!... my second nephew could not make it, although my eldest brother and myself very much want him to come and be exposed to all these things and to all the crap we are going through!.... he came by lrt... walked all the way fm central market.. understand fm him that particular trip he took was the last trip that the lrt gonna stop in central market station... talk about 'manipulation' eh?!?... :) ... he was stunned when he was in the lrt looking down and saw seas of yellow marching towards the same direction.. as he put it... "it was a very nice sight"!... i would get goosebumps when i see that!.. btw, understand from him that my eldest nephew's friend stopped by police twice, when he was on his way for some frisbee competition/training, because he wore a yellow shirt!.. wtf?!?...
the whole things finished by approx 1600 hours... it was another long walk for both of us to get a cab home...
understand that there was approx 80 people arrested (probably for 'formalities') in masjid jamek meeting point... mainly pas supporters/unit amal people... water cannon, tear gas and chemical were sprayed/released!... until now (2245 hours on 10th november 2007) no concrete confirmation on this... we shall wait for the official reports/news in the next couple of days...
things i learnt fm this bersih gathering/march... in no particular order...
1) if you have the same vision and mission for a particular... race and religion does not matter, both this 2 issues won't play a part in it...
2) this bersih gathering/march is indeed a very loud voice to the current ruling bn/umno rotten to the core government!...
3) there are people who are actually very afraid when they read about the news saying no permit given, fear of certain things, etc... but, they want things to be changed!...
4) no matter whatever ways they may be using to stop us fm attending this bersih gathering/march.. NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING can stop us!...
5) it's very nice and comforting to see malaysia still have hope!...
6) it's very nice and comforting to see people march arms in arms regardless who you may be!...
7) unit amal is very professional in handling things!...
8) there are people who love malaysia to bits!...
9) my love for the country went a step deeper!...
10) it's good to expose yr kids to all these things!...
11) my parents and my immediate family members are very supportive of all these things, as they believe in wat the current rulling bn/umno rotten to the core government is doing is very wrong and one sided!...
12) the police created the extremely massive traffic jams all over the klang valley, not the people!...
13) the irritating/annoying sound of helicopters can work better than police car siren!...
14) kyros kebab in sogo is yummilicious!... :) ...
15) it was nice to walk around sogo after such a long time, sogo used to be one of my favourite places to hang out after school!...
16) always have the interest in politics since primary school... if not for monetary issues for now, i WILL take the plunge into politics full time, of course with my parents's blessings, which i think they will give me tho!... :) ...
17) every little tiny help fm everyone, do make a different!...
18) this bersih gathering/march is not a political gathering/march.. no party flags, t-shirts, logo, etc... should be seen... we see nothing political in this bersih gathering/march... people can be very well discipline if it make sense to them tho!...
19) if am aab, i better have the biggest headache now tho!...
20) the chinese and indians in particular must be pro-active in making the country a better, cleaner, fairer and colour blind to live in!... i respect the malays in being very pro-active in these kinda gathering/march... nope, am not talking about those people fm the rotten to the core umno!...
21) kj is really no one.. he is just some dude fm kuwait, some datuk and datin's son... graduated fm a well-known university, hooked up with aab's daughter and voila... he is 'someone' now... also, he can certainly get along very well with power and money now tho!...
22) nazri may say... "this is not the majority, we have 27 million rakyat, only 40,000 turned up"!...
23) it will be interesting to hear mm's point of view on this bersih gathering/march!...
24) general election may not be so soon after all...
25) i still get goosebumps when watching this video, after countless of times... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4ycaduE_D4)!...
26) this is just the beginning to many more things to come, we must continue the struggle... pls do your part!...

understand that there was approx 80 people arrested (probably for 'formalities') in masjid jamek meeting point... mainly pas supporters/unit amal people... water cannon, tear gas and chemical were sprayed/released!... until now (2245 hours on 10th november 2007) no concrete confirmation on this... we shall wait for the official reports/news in the next couple of days...
things i learnt fm this bersih gathering/march... in no particular order...

34 instead of 245... bigger number to 'create fear' in the rakyat?!?... they must be thinking the rakyat are some stupid uneducated fellas eh!...
