Marhaban Ramadhan, semoga kita semua mendapat manfaat dan keberkatan
daripada bulan yang mulia ini.
Sebagaimana yang tuan/puan sedia maklum bahawa selain dari perayaan Aidil Fitri
yang akan disambut oleh umat Islam pada bulan ini, penganut agama hindu
juga merayakan 3 perayaan mereka seperti yang disebut dalam subjek di atas.
Sukacita saya ingin maklumkan bahawa kakitangan Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx perlu berhati-hati
dengan ungkapan ucap selamat sempena perayaan tertentu yang selain daripada
perayaan yang terdapat dalam Islam. Ucap selamat tersebut mestilah diteliti
impilikasinya terutama yang melibatkan hukum dan akidah.
Antaranya ialah ucap selamat Happy Durga Pooja atau Durga Pooja Greetings. Ia
bermakna selamat menyambut hari kebesaran Dewi Durga. Sambutan ini adalah
festival yang paling penting bagi orang-orang Hindu. Ia menandakan ketaatan dan
kepatuhan kepada Dewi Durga yang dianggap sebagai Mother of the Universe. Ia
disambut oleh oleh penganut agama Hindu pada hari-hari berikut:
29 Sept 2006 – Durga Pooja – Saptami
30 Sept 2006 – Durga Pooja – Mahastami
01 Okt 2006 – Durga Pooja – Navami
02 Okt 2006 – Dussehra – Vijaya Dasami
Untuk makluman tuan/puan, Durga Pooja mengikut kepercayaan penganut agama
indu adalah tuhan dewi yang mempunyai tangan yang banyak dan bersilang yang
biasanya kelihatan di kuil-kuil hindu.
Antaranya lagi ialah ucap selamat Happy Deepavali atau lebih dikenali di Benua Kecil
India dengan nama Happy Diwali. Deepavali atau Diwali menandakan kemenangan
kebaikan mengatasi kejahatan. Ia berkaitan dengan agama hindu juga di mana
mitosnya bagi penganut agama hindu di Malaysia ialah tuhan agama hindu yang
bernama Krishna telah membunuh Narakasura. Lalu penganut agama hindu merayakan
kemenangan ini dengan menyalakan lampu serta berpesta. Manakala mitos di Benua
Kecil India pula ialah kemenangan Ramayana membunuh Ravana.
Mengikut kepercayaan hindu, sempena perayaan deepavali mereka akan menerangi
rumah mereka dengan cahaya kerana dewi Lakshmi iaitu dewi kekayaan akan
berkunjung ke rumah yang diterangi cahaya dan akan memberkati keluarga terbabit.
Oleh itu perayaan Lakshmi Pooja akan diadakan 2 hari sebelum deepavali untuk
mendapatkan rezeki dan berkat yang berganda.
Setelah meneliti ketiga-tiga perayaan tadi maka jelaslah ianya ada kaitan secara
langsung dengan kepercayaan agama hindu. Seluruh kakitangan Malaysia adalah
dilarang untuk mengucapkan ucap selamat kepada ketiga perayaan di atas dan lainlain
lagi yang sepertinya kerana ianya boleh menyebabkan berlakunya syirik. Budaya
korporat Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx yang bersendikan Syariat tidak mengizinkan ianya berlaku
sekalipun untuk pelanggan yang beragama hindu atau agama lain yang mana ucap
selamat tadi membabitkan tuhan mereka. Ucapan Happy Durga Pooja, Happy Lakshmi
Pooja dan Happy Deepavali seolah-olah mengucap selamat buat tuhan hindu yang
bernama Durga, Laksmi dan Krishna. Dan ianya jelas bertentangan dengan akidah
Islam.
Allah berfirman dalam surah ali-’Imran ayat 18 yang bermaksud: “Allah telah bersaksi
bahawa tiada tuhan selain Dia”. Dalam surah Muhammad ayat 1 Allah berfirman yang
bermaksud: “Maka ketahuilah bahawa tiada tuhan selain Allah”.
Bagi mereka yang telah terlanjur mengucap selamat kepada penganut hindu seperti
ketiga-tiga greetings di atas maka hendaklah segera bertaubat dan tidak
mengulanginya lagi pada masa-masa akan datang.
Semoga usaha kita untuk mengamalkan Syariat sebagai budaya korporat Xxxxxxx
Xxxxxxxx diberkati Allah dan mencapai kejayaan yang kita harapkan.

Ikim: Sack Takaful man
PETALING JAYA: The Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) has called for the sacking of Takaful Malaysia's Syariah Department head for issuing an e-mail banning staff from wishing Hindus Happy Deepavali.
Its director-general, Dr Syed Ali Tawfik Al Attas, said Mohd Fauzi Mustaffa should be sacked because he was not fit to hold the position.
“Fauzi should also repent for his arrogance in thinking that he has the knowledge on the matter,” said Dr Syed Ali in a statement to The Star's Bahasa Malaysia news portal mStar Online yesterday.
He also agreed with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin who said on Wednesday that the ban imposed by Mohd Fauzi was his personal view and based on a narrow understanding of Islam.
In the e-mail that was sent to the staff of the Islamic insurance company, Mohd Fauzi said wishing “Happy Durga Pooja”, “Happy Lakshmi Pooja” and “Happy Deepavali” was deemed as expressing greetings to the Hindu Gods Durga, Lakshmi and Krishna, which he viewed as going against the Islamic faith.
In the e-mail dated Oct 3, Mohd Fauzi said Takaful Malaysia staff were prohibited from conveying their greetings for the three celebrations and other similar festivities because they could be deemed as blasphemous.
He also said those who had uttered such greetings to Hindus should repent immediately and not repeat them.

(Kuala Lumpur, Thursday): DAP express shock that Takaful Malaysia’s Syariah department head Fauzi Mustaffar has sent an e-mail forbidding Muslims to wish Hindu friends Happy Deepavali because Deepavali was a religious festival where Hindu deities were worshipped and thus wishing Hindus was like syirik (practising polytheism) to Muslims. In his email to his employees published in The Star yesterday, he said, “So Muslims who have inadvertently wished Hindus a Happy Deepavali, Happy Durga Pooja or Happy Lakshmi Pooja must immediately repent and not repeat it in the future”.
Calling on Muslims to repent is equivalent to branding Muslim greeting Hindu friends Happy Deepavali as a sin against God. This branding is insulting to Hindus as Deepavali is a holy celebration by Hindus. And also insulting to the status of Islam as a holy religion that respects other religious beliefs and practices where it has never labelled greeting Hindus Happy Deepavali as sinful.
DAP gives Takaful Malaysia 48 hours to direct its Syariah department head Fauzi Mustaffar to apologise to the Indian community for his derogatory and extremist e-mail forbidding Muslims from wishing Hindus Happy Deepavali. That a well-educated man well-versed in Islamic law can hold such extremist views is a sad and shocking indictment of the growing intolerant views against non-Muslims held by the few extremist Muslims. Should Takaful Malaysia fail to do so, then action shall be taken by DAP to uphold the right to freedom of practicing one’s religious beliefs and safeguarding racial and religious in Malaysia.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin has disassociated himself from Fauzi’s extremist views as without any religious authority and stressed that in a multi-religious and multi-racial country like ours, it is important to live in harmony and be nice to one another. However he has not done enough by demanding that Fauzi makes a full retraction of such views and make a public unconditional apology to the Indian community.
Would Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin be so undemanding if Hindus were told not to greet Muslims Selamat Hari Raya? If the Minister does not want to be accused of practicing double standards then he should press that Takaful retract and apologise for such extremism that insults Hindus, divisive, promotes hatred and poses a serious threat to racial and religious harmony.
Should Fauzi refuse to do so, then he should be sacked or be investigated under Section 4 of the 1948 Sedition Act with fines of RM 5,000 and imprisonment of 3 years. Section 3 (e) defines “seditious tendency" as a tendency that to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Malaysia. Malaysia should prove that Islam hadhari celebrates religious freedom and has no room for such wrong and extremist religious branding.

Mengikut kepercayaan hindu, sempena perayaan deepavali mereka akan menerangi
rumah mereka dengan cahaya kerana dewi Lakshmi iaitu dewi kekayaan akan
berkunjung ke rumah yang diterangi cahaya dan akan memberkati keluarga terbabit.
Oleh itu perayaan Lakshmi Pooja akan diadakan 2 hari sebelum deepavali untuk
mendapatkan rezeki dan berkat yang berganda.
Setelah meneliti ketiga-tiga perayaan tadi maka jelaslah ianya ada kaitan secara
langsung dengan kepercayaan agama hindu. Seluruh kakitangan Malaysia adalah
dilarang untuk mengucapkan ucap selamat kepada ketiga perayaan di atas dan lainlain
lagi yang sepertinya kerana ianya boleh menyebabkan berlakunya syirik. Budaya
korporat Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx yang bersendikan Syariat tidak mengizinkan ianya berlaku
sekalipun untuk pelanggan yang beragama hindu atau agama lain yang mana ucap
selamat tadi membabitkan tuhan mereka. Ucapan Happy Durga Pooja, Happy Lakshmi
Pooja dan Happy Deepavali seolah-olah mengucap selamat buat tuhan hindu yang
bernama Durga, Laksmi dan Krishna. Dan ianya jelas bertentangan dengan akidah
Islam.
Allah berfirman dalam surah ali-’Imran ayat 18 yang bermaksud: “Allah telah bersaksi
bahawa tiada tuhan selain Dia”. Dalam surah Muhammad ayat 1 Allah berfirman yang
bermaksud: “Maka ketahuilah bahawa tiada tuhan selain Allah”.
Bagi mereka yang telah terlanjur mengucap selamat kepada penganut hindu seperti
ketiga-tiga greetings di atas maka hendaklah segera bertaubat dan tidak
mengulanginya lagi pada masa-masa akan datang.
Semoga usaha kita untuk mengamalkan Syariat sebagai budaya korporat Xxxxxxx

Ikim: Sack Takaful man
PETALING JAYA: The Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) has called for the sacking of Takaful Malaysia's Syariah Department head for issuing an e-mail banning staff from wishing Hindus Happy Deepavali.
Its director-general, Dr Syed Ali Tawfik Al Attas, said Mohd Fauzi Mustaffa should be sacked because he was not fit to hold the position.
“Fauzi should also repent for his arrogance in thinking that he has the knowledge on the matter,” said Dr Syed Ali in a statement to The Star's Bahasa Malaysia news portal mStar Online yesterday.
He also agreed with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin who said on Wednesday that the ban imposed by Mohd Fauzi was his personal view and based on a narrow understanding of Islam.
In the e-mail that was sent to the staff of the Islamic insurance company, Mohd Fauzi said wishing “Happy Durga Pooja”, “Happy Lakshmi Pooja” and “Happy Deepavali” was deemed as expressing greetings to the Hindu Gods Durga, Lakshmi and Krishna, which he viewed as going against the Islamic faith.
In the e-mail dated Oct 3, Mohd Fauzi said Takaful Malaysia staff were prohibited from conveying their greetings for the three celebrations and other similar festivities because they could be deemed as blasphemous.
He also said those who had uttered such greetings to Hindus should repent immediately and not repeat them.

(Kuala Lumpur, Thursday): DAP express shock that Takaful Malaysia’s Syariah department head Fauzi Mustaffar has sent an e-mail forbidding Muslims to wish Hindu friends Happy Deepavali because Deepavali was a religious festival where Hindu deities were worshipped and thus wishing Hindus was like syirik (practising polytheism) to Muslims. In his email to his employees published in The Star yesterday, he said, “So Muslims who have inadvertently wished Hindus a Happy Deepavali, Happy Durga Pooja or Happy Lakshmi Pooja must immediately repent and not repeat it in the future”.
Calling on Muslims to repent is equivalent to branding Muslim greeting Hindu friends Happy Deepavali as a sin against God. This branding is insulting to Hindus as Deepavali is a holy celebration by Hindus. And also insulting to the status of Islam as a holy religion that respects other religious beliefs and practices where it has never labelled greeting Hindus Happy Deepavali as sinful.
DAP gives Takaful Malaysia 48 hours to direct its Syariah department head Fauzi Mustaffar to apologise to the Indian community for his derogatory and extremist e-mail forbidding Muslims from wishing Hindus Happy Deepavali. That a well-educated man well-versed in Islamic law can hold such extremist views is a sad and shocking indictment of the growing intolerant views against non-Muslims held by the few extremist Muslims. Should Takaful Malaysia fail to do so, then action shall be taken by DAP to uphold the right to freedom of practicing one’s religious beliefs and safeguarding racial and religious in Malaysia.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin has disassociated himself from Fauzi’s extremist views as without any religious authority and stressed that in a multi-religious and multi-racial country like ours, it is important to live in harmony and be nice to one another. However he has not done enough by demanding that Fauzi makes a full retraction of such views and make a public unconditional apology to the Indian community.
Would Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin be so undemanding if Hindus were told not to greet Muslims Selamat Hari Raya? If the Minister does not want to be accused of practicing double standards then he should press that Takaful retract and apologise for such extremism that insults Hindus, divisive, promotes hatred and poses a serious threat to racial and religious harmony.
Should Fauzi refuse to do so, then he should be sacked or be investigated under Section 4 of the 1948 Sedition Act with fines of RM 5,000 and imprisonment of 3 years. Section 3 (e) defines “seditious tendency" as a tendency that to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Malaysia. Malaysia should prove that Islam hadhari celebrates religious freedom and has no room for such wrong and extremist religious branding.

initially there was no report/s or watsoever why they wanna seal the church...
the district police chief assistant commissioner said nutin much about this 'operation'...
but...
there's a report today (as per 2nd msg below) saying the registrar of societies had de-registered the church association...
wait... hang on...
why this reason was no mentioned earlier?!?...

why the registrar of societies de-registered the church?!?... no reason behind it... so, wat was the reason behind it?!?...

IPOH: A group of worshippers yesterday holed themselves up inside a building in First Garden here, defying a court order that the premises be sealed.
Police were called in to defuse the situation and, after hours of negotiations, gave members of the Tabernacle of David until Monday to resolve the dispute.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jalaludin Ibrahim did not want to say much except that the group, which started in 1997, had been given time to resolve the matter.
The group had been using the premises as a church since 2000.
The drama unfolded at 10am yesterday when a court bailiff, accompanied by several policemen, arrived to execute the court order obtained by a company which plans to develop the property.
But some 50 worshippers refused to leave the building.
Outside, another group staged a demonstration to denounce the move to seal the premises.
After negotiations, which lasted for four hours, failed, the bailiff sealed the building with the 50 worshippers inside.
Police were called in after the situation turned tense. At 7pm, the seal was broken, prompting those outside to enter.
Lawyers representing the association have advised it to lodge a police report on the move to seal the building.

IPOH: The grace period offered by the police ended yesterday but members of a church in First Garden have shown no signs of complying with a High Court order to seal the premises.
Counsel for the church, M. Manoharan, said he had advised the members to continue using the premises, insisting that no one could stop a church from carrying out its religious activities.
It was a "lame excuse" to evict church-goers from the building merely because the Registrar of Societies had de-registered the church association, he said, adding that matters concerning ownership of the premises were still being heard in a civil suit.
"Places of worship are trust properties, they cannot be simply bought or sold."
Asked on efforts to obtain a court order to stay the execution of last Wednesday’s seal order, Manoharan said that he was still waiting to get the full set of court documents from the opposing side’s lawyer, N. P. Ramachandran, in relation to the seal order.
He had also asked Ramachandran to delay executing the order.
Meanwhile, Pastor John Sentosam claimed that a notice signed by Ramachandran was handed to him yesterday, informing him that the company was withdrawing its action to seal the premises.

PUTRAJAYA: More than 200 followers of the Thaveethin Koodaram Church in Taman Pertama, Ipoh, submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister here seeking his assistance to save their church, which is also known as the Church of the Tabernacle of David, from closure.
The church’s senior pastor and founder Menon Menasa, who was accompanied by Keadilan’s vice-president N. Gobalakrishnan, handed over the 77-page memorandum to the Prime Minister’s senior private secretary Ahmad Yaacob.
The memorandum, among others, stated that Pastor Menon had been principally responsible for the establishment of the church.

Can cops take our SIM cards?
A DEBATE has started on whether police have the right to confiscate SIM cards.
Sin Chew Daily reported that the police have the right to inspect the mobile phones of those who behave suspiciously – and, if need be, confiscate their SIM cards, but several groups are against such action.
The debate stemmed from a complaint by a motorist who said he had to hand over his SIM card to the police during a roadblock.
The paper quoted Federal CID deputy director II (Administration) Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan as saying that the police could charge those who refuse to give up their SIM cards.
“The police will check if a person’s mobile phone contains pornographic materials and malicious rumours,” he said.
However, he declined to comment if such a move was against a person’s rights.
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) advised those who feel their rights had been infringed upon to lodge a complaint against the police.
Bar Council chairman Yeoh Yang Poh conceded that while there was no legal provision to allow the police to inspect a person’s mobile phone, the police could do so under special conditions.
However, he warned that it would be unlawful if the SIM card and mobile phone were confiscated from those who had not committed a crime.
On another issue related to human rights, China Press quoted Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow as saying that although the Government encourages the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at home, it should not be done in a way that invades the privacy of the occupants.
He said that while images captured on the camera could be helpful in cases of break-ins, such cameras should not be installed in the toilets or in a servant’s room.
The daily also reported a Health Ministry programme which has paramedics in Kuala Lumpur moving around on motorcycles.
It quoted Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon as saying that the motorcycles help the paramedics avoid traffic jams in the city.

i personally think the way we communicate shows that we are malaysians... an unique way of speaking, talking, communicating, etc...

Sunday Interview: Putting the lid on ‘bahasa rojak’

To stop the spread of 'bahasa rojak', the government says it will fine those who mutate and promote incorrect use of language on billboards and posters. Confusion followed with retailers wondering whether the language police will put a stop to names like PWTC and KLCC. Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim clears the air with V. VASUDEVAN and R.S. KAMINI.
Q: Your proposal on use of the national language has created a stir.
A: It should not stir anything. This is something that has been dormant.
Proper national language usage is stated in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution and the National Language Act. Nothing has been done to develop the language for decades.
So, we had formed a "Committee to Strengthen Bahasa" comprising representatives from my ministry, the Education Ministry and Information Ministry.
Others include people from the publishing industry and advertising industry.
Our job is to develop programmes and suggestions for the government to strengthen the usage of the national language. Emergence of digital media and television has resulted in rampant usage of bahasa rojak.
Q: Why do it now?
A: It has come to a stage where errors visible to the public were not being corrected and more parties seemed to develop their own terms.
For example, developers no longer use heritage terms for housing areas or major roads. They prefer terms like "boulevard" and "precinct" and these words have not been fully accepted by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).
The terms’ committee is responsible for creating an image for the national language. For us at the ministry, we look at our national language as a culture.
The language was responsible for the creation of our nation. It has to be equal with the English language. Not one step above or one step below.
Q: There has been debate about the term MyKad. What’s wrong with MyKad?
A: A lot. MyKad is not a proper Bahasa Malaysia term but was bureaucratically placed. My means saya punya.
If it stands for Malaysia, you should put it after "Kad". But now, it seems that two languages were mixed.
The National Registration Department only defended the definition of MyKad (Malaysia-Kad Akuan Diri) after the topic was brought up. It is my job to see the national language is well laid.
The image and proper usage of the language must be maintained. If they insist on using MyKad, then you should just refer to it that way and drop the word Kad Pengenalan. This is just one small example of past error.
Q: So, it is acceptable then? What about other terms such as Rakan Cop?
A: Probably acceptable. Obviously not much thought was given to this. We could have had a better term for it. Let’s not get into other terms.
There are too many to consider. What I would like is for us to consider our mother tongue in future.
Let the experts like DBP participate and decide instead of just using terms like Touch ’n Go. Why use the English term when we could say Sentuh & Jalan.
This was not my concern alone but was agreed to by my committee and the Cabinet when it was brought up to them.
Q: But for a language to develop, should it not assimilate words from other languages?
A: We don’t deny that but the assimilative process must be accepted and not superimposed midway. Other languages don’t face this problem. We face it because the "bazaar" slang is easy.
Words such as kerusi and kopi were taken from the Portuguese and English languages. They were slowly accepted, which is not a problem.
But suddenly I hear Marilah kita pergi lunch (Let us go for lunch). We have to tell people that is not how we should speak. If you’re using English, use English and not mix it.
Some may ask why say things like this during a time of modernity and globalisation. I say the national language should not be tormented to an extent where it loses its identity.
Bahasa rojak is an integral part in this sense We cannot accept signs like Kopi Kedai. It has to be phrased properly.
Words like "precinct" was used out of sophistication. "Boulevard" can be replaced with Lebuh Perdana. What is wrong in using the available words?
Of course, we are not going to change road names like Conlay or KLCC or PWTC as they have their historical background. But in future, why not consult DBP if in doubt over words to be used?

Q: But signboard owners at shops say they have submitted the names to be approved by the local government. They have done their part and any correction should have been done before the board was put up.
A: This is the trouble now. The local authorities may not have enough personnel to bother about this.
It doesn’t make it right for us to let it go. The attitude must change.
Q: What would DBP’s powers be once your proposal for it to act as an enforcement agency is in place?
A: It’s not just an enforcement body. It has looked into the book industry, promotional and educational aspects of languages.
We would like to approach this issue in the same manner we approach our courtesy campaign congenially. We want to engage everyone.
Q: Some of these terms are meant to be catchy.
A: Please don’t use the term "catchy" at the expense of deriding the national language. You can be catchy but don’t butcher the language.
Q: Has there been any resistance to your proposal?
A: Of course. It’s customary for our society to counter something before the act is done. The debates will go on and on.
I don’t think DBP will go around issuing summonses as they wish.
Q: What about movie titles and subtitles? Would standardising the language usage for this industry affect the colour and drama?
A: We have made some mistakes in the past by allowing dialogue that "was half fish and half eel" to pass through.
We will try to stop that. I don’t think proper usage of language will kill the colour of the movie.
A dash of English is okay but we should not have every other sentence adulterated.

i personally think the way we communicate shows that we are malaysians... an unique way of speaking, talking, communicating, etc...
he is the one who said no to foreign artist who shows a lot of flesh... and 'if u read in between the lines', he went on making a decision on behalf of the whole of malaysia.. dun think even parliment pass this 'rules and regulations'...

Sunday Interview: Putting the lid on ‘bahasa rojak’

To stop the spread of 'bahasa rojak', the government says it will fine those who mutate and promote incorrect use of language on billboards and posters. Confusion followed with retailers wondering whether the language police will put a stop to names like PWTC and KLCC. Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim clears the air with V. VASUDEVAN and R.S. KAMINI.
Q: Your proposal on use of the national language has created a stir.
A: It should not stir anything. This is something that has been dormant.
Proper national language usage is stated in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution and the National Language Act. Nothing has been done to develop the language for decades.
So, we had formed a "Committee to Strengthen Bahasa" comprising representatives from my ministry, the Education Ministry and Information Ministry.
Others include people from the publishing industry and advertising industry.
Our job is to develop programmes and suggestions for the government to strengthen the usage of the national language. Emergence of digital media and television has resulted in rampant usage of bahasa rojak.
Q: Why do it now?
A: It has come to a stage where errors visible to the public were not being corrected and more parties seemed to develop their own terms.
For example, developers no longer use heritage terms for housing areas or major roads. They prefer terms like "boulevard" and "precinct" and these words have not been fully accepted by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).
The terms’ committee is responsible for creating an image for the national language. For us at the ministry, we look at our national language as a culture.
The language was responsible for the creation of our nation. It has to be equal with the English language. Not one step above or one step below.
Q: There has been debate about the term MyKad. What’s wrong with MyKad?
A: A lot. MyKad is not a proper Bahasa Malaysia term but was bureaucratically placed. My means saya punya.
If it stands for Malaysia, you should put it after "Kad". But now, it seems that two languages were mixed.
The National Registration Department only defended the definition of MyKad (Malaysia-Kad Akuan Diri) after the topic was brought up. It is my job to see the national language is well laid.
The image and proper usage of the language must be maintained. If they insist on using MyKad, then you should just refer to it that way and drop the word Kad Pengenalan. This is just one small example of past error.
Q: So, it is acceptable then? What about other terms such as Rakan Cop?
A: Probably acceptable. Obviously not much thought was given to this. We could have had a better term for it. Let’s not get into other terms.
There are too many to consider. What I would like is for us to consider our mother tongue in future.
Let the experts like DBP participate and decide instead of just using terms like Touch ’n Go. Why use the English term when we could say Sentuh & Jalan.
This was not my concern alone but was agreed to by my committee and the Cabinet when it was brought up to them.
Q: But for a language to develop, should it not assimilate words from other languages?
A: We don’t deny that but the assimilative process must be accepted and not superimposed midway. Other languages don’t face this problem. We face it because the "bazaar" slang is easy.
Words such as kerusi and kopi were taken from the Portuguese and English languages. They were slowly accepted, which is not a problem.
But suddenly I hear Marilah kita pergi lunch (Let us go for lunch). We have to tell people that is not how we should speak. If you’re using English, use English and not mix it.
Some may ask why say things like this during a time of modernity and globalisation. I say the national language should not be tormented to an extent where it loses its identity.
Bahasa rojak is an integral part in this sense We cannot accept signs like Kopi Kedai. It has to be phrased properly.
Words like "precinct" was used out of sophistication. "Boulevard" can be replaced with Lebuh Perdana. What is wrong in using the available words?
Of course, we are not going to change road names like Conlay or KLCC or PWTC as they have their historical background. But in future, why not consult DBP if in doubt over words to be used?

IPOH: A circular compelling all state department heads to buy stationery and rent photocopiers only from bumiputra companies has sparked a public outcry.
Pantai Remis assemblyman Nga Kor Ming said he had received many complaints from suppliers over the matter.
“I have also checked with the state secretariat about the circular and I have been told that it is the policy,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Nga, who is also DAP Socialist Youth chief, said the policy was a “serious marginalisation” of non-bumiputra suppliers.
A copy of the circular for renting of photocopiers, which was made available to the press, states that the state Financial Office is allowing all state department heads to select a company for the service after the contracts with four existing suppliers expire.
The June 9, 2006, circular, also states that the department heads must choose a company which has a bumiputra status.
The circular named the four existing suppliers as CS OA Enterprise, Ricoh (M) Sdn Bhd, Tele Dynamics Metro Sdn Bhd and Successive Enterprise.
Nga urged Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali to view the matter seriously. He said the state policy was a form of “abuse of the National Economic Policy” which called for 30% of the equity to go to bumiputras.
“This state policy is calling for 100% and it will only enrich bumiputras who are closely linked to Umno,” he charged.
“We are only calling for fair treatment and fair competition.”
When contacted, state Financial Officer Datuk Jamalludin Al Amini Ahmad declined comment.
